Types of GST Return and its Due Date

Types of GST Registration

Businesses operating in India must register for Goods and Services Tax (GST) depending on their sales, nature of operations, and location. Understanding the different types of GST Registration helps businesses comply with the requirements and run smoothly. It describes the different GST registration types and their importance.

1 Regular GST Registration

Following are the basic registrations for enterprises providing taxable goods and services. Businesses with annual turnover above a threshold level (Rs 40 lakh in most states and Rs 20 lakh in special category states) are required to register. Regular GST registration is for ongoing business operations including local and international supplies.

2 Composition Scheme Registration

A reduced GST registration scheme for startups aims to reduce the compliance burden. This applies to enterprises with an annual turnover of up to Rs 1.5 crore. This system enables firms to pay GST at a pre-determined rate based on turnover without claiming the input tax credit.

3 Casual Taxable Person Registration

This type of GST registration is for firms that occasionally provide goods or services in areas where they do not have a fixed location. It is often used by event organizers, exhibitors, and enterprises participating in trade shows. Casual Taxable Person Registration is valid for 90 days only and can be extended.

4 Non-Resident Taxable Person Registration

Non-residents selling products or services in India, who don’t have a permanent place of business are subject to this registration category. This is often required for foreign businesses or individuals who make infrequent transactions in India. Non-Resident Taxable Person Registration is temporary and is usually used for trade or import exhibitions.

5 E-Commerce Operator Registration

E-Commerce Operator Registration is required for operators who facilitate online sales of goods or services. This category includes platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart, and Zomato which are responsible for collecting and remitting GST on behalf of sellers.

6 Input Service Distributors (ISD) Registration

This registration type is for firms that distribute Input Tax Credit (ITC) to multiple branches or units. It guarantees accurate ITC allocation across branches and is used by businesses with multiple offices that require centralized input credit distribution.

7 TDS and TCS Registration

Some GST registration is required for TDS and TCS. Government bodies and e-commerce operators must follow GST laws for tax deductions and collection, if applicable.

Conclusion

Each form of GST registration is tailored to specific business needs, ensuring compliance and smooth operations. Selecting the appropriate type of registration is important for legal compliance and efficient tax administration.
